The Breakdown

by

This is one of those books, that you hear people talking about. If you didn't get to read it first month it was out, you start feeling, like missed out on something. You read reviews, see topics discussing characters or some things from the book, and you feel excluded... because you haven't read it yet.
You ask your book shop to ring you "immediately" when they get copies, you put your name on the waiting list in the library, you asked all your friends (even those who only read Facebook posts) if anyone got a copy.... and then you get it!...
You anticipate the thrill, you are all excited, imagining what it is all about and how you going to stay up late till the early hours of the morning finishing the chapter...
You eventually make yourself a cup of coffee, get comfortable on the sofa and....

...That's when the disappointment sets off. What was it about?...

Cass is quite stressed. She happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
On her way from a party, during a bad storm, she uses a short-cut through the woods and passes a car with a woman sitting in it... It is a ferocious storm, lashing rain, and it's quite unnerving, so Cass passes a stranger in the car, assuming that she is not in need of help... Next morning Cass hears the news that the woman was murdered... More to that, Cass actually knew the woman, but didn't recognise her when she passed her.

With no evident reason why the victim could have been murdered, the murderer on the loose, Cass starts getting silent phone calls. She has no idea who can be harassing her, but she just has that gut feeling that it has something to do with the murder.... Cass's husband, Matthew is very protective of her and very supportive of Cass but just does not see the link...

On top of that, Cass notices that she keeps forgetting things... Like her mother who had dementia...
Cass has her friends and Matthew to support her and to help her but will that be enough? Will her marriage be strong enough to battle dementia and all her fears?...
Is there any link between the calls that Cass has been getting and the murder?...

Hmmm.... I must say, I did not quite get what was all the hype about this book. Though same can be said about "Behind Closed Doors".
I did not quite get all the excitement. It was OK to read, there was not much mystery or suspense as such and the possible lines of investigation were rather obvious, but, still, it was passable.
It was not even the actual construction of the story, or lack of the thrill of the thriller :))

For me the writing dragged it all the way down. The manner in which the book is written just did nothing for me. It just didn't click with me at all.
It felt a bit amateurish, a bit repetitive and too simplified. The descriptive parts felt like if they were done by a 10-year-old child, with all the "I looked... I saw... I got up... I took..."

So overall it was not bad, but given all the hype, I expected much, much more from this book.
