"Lying in Wait"

by Liz Nugent.

Super! Loved every page of this book!

I had read Unravelling Oliver when it only came out and liked it at the time. And I remember thinking then that if Liz Nugent ever writes another book, it'll hard to top Unravelling Oliver. But she definitely did it!

Lying in Wait goes to deeper and darker twists, it slides one wrong into another and lets the mixture brew... What happens when the boiling point is reached?... Is it possible to keep in all under the lid and not to let the poison spill?...

We are invited to follow the lives of two families.
One is the upper class family, residing in a fabulous big house. Andrew is a judge, he has done well in his career and he is well respected. He loves his wife, Lydia, and she loves him. They have a teenage son, Lawrence. They seem to be a happy family. Though they encountered a betrayal of a family friend which led to some financial trouble, they are still doing OK.
More than anything they want another child. Lydia always dreamt about large family. But one miscarriage after another, her hope has faded... In a desperate attempt to make his wife happy, Andrew agrees to her plan to have a surrogate mother (even though it is illegal in Ireland). But Lydia's dream of a happy family with lots of children is not meant to come true. Instead Lydia finds herself helping her husband to hide a dead body. Months later, Andrew will be dead too...

Karen's family is bound by years of grief. Karen's sister, Annie, has disappeared years ago. No trace, no suspect as such, but still a fragile hope that one they will find Annie.
Karen is entering a new promising career, she is happy and hopeful. She finds courage to break off from her husband.

Lawrence is always trying to protect others. But will there be anybody to protect him? Will he be able to help himself? Who will take care of Lawrence?
Who is the worst in their devious acts?

Lying in Wait is a brilliant book! It has great suspense, it is well devised and always leaves room to the question: "Will it be or will it not...?" and then it turns out to be something else...

Nugent brings us on a journey to the dark places. She strips it in layers and then exposes whatever is really and truly is there, beneath the surface, beneath the time and memories, beneath the words and feelings. Whatever it is, if don't like what you eventually see, you will certainly enjoy the process of discovering it.
